UNIT 9 THE WEATHER

The weather is avery popular topic of conversation in Britain. That's because the weather changes a lot.
When the weather is good, people complaint thehat is'd too hot.
Wheb it rains, they day it's too wet. When it isn't sunny, they say it's too cld.


Winter lasts form December to February.
Spring is from Varch to May. It starts to get a bit warmen and there are more sunny days.
The summer months are June, July ans August when i can be every hot.
Then the autumn- September, October, November- Often has foggy, cold, wet days and the leaves fall form the trees.


It's not surprising thst Braitain has got one of the most important weather centres is the world.

Two huges supercomputers analyse information from many sources including datellites.The Met office also luks at environmentalissues such as global warming ande climate forecast.The coputers can predict the tropical storms and hurricanes that cause so much damage aroun the world.

UNIT 8 READING

British people read a lot. They read books, newspaper and magazines. And of course they read text messages on their mobile phones.

You can also now Borrow CDs, videos and DVDs of films and television programmes.
Some libraries even let you borrow computer games.

The British Library is one of the world's graters libraries.
People predicted that radio, then television, then the internet would kill reading, but it is still a very popular activity.

UNIT 7 BRITISH SPORTS

At the weekend in Britain, millions of people take part in some kind of sporting activity.
The top level of the game is professional football in the Premiership. We went to a training
session with a Premiership team from South East London, Charlton Athletic.

Cricket is the main summer sport in Britain.
Cricket is payed between tow team of 11 people

Tennis is another popular sport, especially in the summer after the famous Wimbledon Championships
Other popular sport are golf, swimming, cycling, Keep fit and walking.

UNIT 6 ANIMALD

People love animals. But some of the world's animals are in danger of extinction.
But the most serious threat to animals in from man.
In some part of the world people collect rhino horn of use in medicine. tourists form ivory from. Sharl's fin soup is favorite in many restaurants.Chimpanzee and whale meat are popular with some people.

The number of animals in some species in now every small and they may not exist at all for much longer.
It started in Britain in 1961 and has now got a global network in 90 countries.
Lympne Animal Park there are elephants, lions, African hunting dogs and many others.
The animals are hen put back into heir natural wild habitat.

They are surviving and adapting successfully to conditions there.
This is and African black rhino. There are only 3.000 wild rhinos and 2oo in zoos.

UIT 5 BRITISH HOUSES

Well 90% of the population live in towns.
There are lots of different kind of houses you fend in British towns.
Lots of people live in flats, especially in big towns and cities.

Houses in different parts of Britain can look very different.
There are lots of regional variation because builders use local materials.

A famous traditional saying is 'An Englishman's home is his castle'.
British people spend a lot of time and money on their homes and gardens.
British people are always trying to make their home into a castle

UNIT 4 SHOPPING

People in Britain really like shopping.
In a recent survey 56% of women between the ages of 16 and 40 described shopping as their main
hobby.
They often go shopping every day.

The sell different thing like food, medicines and cosmetics, clothes and books.

This is Bloewtare near London.It's the larges shopping complex in Europe withe over 330
different shops and three big department stores.

There are also 40 bars and restaurants and thirteen- screen cinema.

UNIT 3 SCHOOL IN BRITAIN

For most students in Britain, the school day starts between eight thirty and nine o'clock.
People travel to school using different kids of transport.
They walk, they cycle and they come in cars.

After two or three lessons there is a break. This is fifteen minutes when students go out into the playground to have jun after all that concentration!
There's usually times to play.

The main subjects in the school timetable are English, maths and science. IT is also popular.
Them there's French or Spanish, history and geography.Student also study art, music and PE.

Students have homework every day.

UNIT 2 FOOD IN BRITAIN

Most schools in Britain provide hot meals and salads every day but many students prefer to take
their own lunch to school.
This is a "packed lunch".

Sarah's dad and Sarah make her packed lunch every morning.
Today she's got a tuna mayonnaise sandwich and an apple. Sarah's lunch is healthy.
Sarah eats her lunch with friends in the school.

A lot of chocolate, crisps, fatty foods and cola isn't good for people.But these foods are everywhere.
This is part of an advertisement on British TV.

one school in England helps student to eat healthy food with the Green Machine.
Green Machines have got tots of interesting snacks.
These students are enjoying their food ant it's good for them too.

UNIT 1 BRITSH ROYAL FAMILY

This is the British Royal Family. This is the Queen of England.
Queen Elisabeth the second. The Queen live in a palace in London
(Buckingham palace).The Royal Family's name is Windsor and they've got a castle in the town
of Windsor near London.

Prince William and Prince Harry are the Queen's grandchildren.
They are the sons of Princess Diana and prince Charles.
Prince Charles Prince William and Prince Harry like to ride horses.
They play a sport called polo.

A lot of people like to see the Royal Family so they often appear in public.
It is a difficult for the Royal Family to have private lives.
Newspapers and television want stories about them.
